Reports of Taco Bell customers finding rats in their food have recently surfaced, prompting questions about how and why these animals found their way into meals served at this restaurant.

Authorities in Colorado state that a man was hospitalized after eating rat poison in his from-where-to-eat order from Taco Bell. Taco Bell on Smoky Hill Road and Buckley Avenue in Aurora, Colorado, is now being investigated by the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.

News media partners reported that a newspaper editor said he became violently ill shortly afterwards and called 911. Ambulance services were contacted to carry him away to the hospital, where it was confirmed that rat poison was contained in the meal he had consumed shortly before.

Surveillance cameras captured video footage from both the interior and exterior of the Taco Bell as the Sheriff’s Office oversaw an investigation into the matter. Because of the footage collected from both angles, the investigation was an “open and active” one, and the Sheriff’s Office intended to treat the case as if it suspected the male obtained the contaminated menu from the restaurant with the rat poison in it.

Deputy John Bartmann, the sheriff’s spokesman, reported Sunday that a person, who the office is not naming, bought burritos at the restaurant. While there, he argued with employees because the restaurant’s drink station wasn’t working. After that, the man called 911 after he was served the food and became unwell, Bartmann says. He was then hospitalized.
